Each Sunday in 2020 and 2021 I’ll be featuring one block from my Lodestars quilt pattern on my blog and on Instagram. This quilt has 104 foundation paper pieced blocks, each named after an inspirational woman from history.
Feel free to follow along here or on Instagram (@CrispyKristin), or better yet, sew along! Use the hashtags #Lodestarsquilt and #Lodestarsblock1. I’d love to see your blocks!
You can see all the blocks I’ve blogged about so far on the Lodestars Blocks page.
Block 1 was named after Maya Angelou (1928–2014). She was an African-American poet, a singer, a prolific writer, and a civil rights activist.
I thought for some time about how to best showcase the women I chose for this quilt on my blog. I came to the conclusion that it does not do justice to any of them to simply highlight their achievements in a blog post.
Instead, I’ll highly encourage you to make yourself a cup of tea, sit down, and take the time to read all about this amazing woman and her life on her Wikipedia page. Afterwards, please go on from there and read her other works if they inspire you as they have inspired me.
See you next Sunday with another block and another fascinating woman to learn more about!

What a fantastical idea. How fun.
