If you’re new to my 52 zippers project, you can read the backstory, see all the zipper pouches, and download basic zipper pouch instructions here.

So this time I wanted to make something smaller that would both stand up on its own and open wide enough that I easily reach inside. I came across the Open Wide pouch and thought I’d give it a shot! I made the smallest size in the pattern.

For the exterior fabric I used a cute under the sea print combined with some denim chambray. I lined it with a light blue Carolyn Friedlander print.

I do like how the zipper “tail” tucks into the little loop on the end instead of flapping loose, but next time I’d make the tail maybe 0.5″ to 1″ longer so it doesn’t pull down on the zipper.

I really like the little loop made by the binding at the top of the zipper—it makes a nice & cute little handle.

If I had to complain about something about this bag, it is that the mesh lining pockets don’t lie flat against the sides and so get snarled up in whatever you try to put in the bag. I think next time I’d make the pocket bindings from foldover elastic so I could keep them taut while attaching to the lining.

Zipper pouch specs:

  • Size: exactly as written in the pattern, size small.

See you back here next time with another zip pouch!
