If you’re new to my 52 zippers project, you can read the backstory, see all the zipper pouches, and download basic zipper pouch instructions here.
For this zipper bag, I was hoping to make a new toiletries bag for traveling. The Double zip gear bag by Annie’s looked perfect and I was super excited to make it!
I don’t use a ton of different toiletries so it turned out to be a fair amount too big for me. I can however see it holding all the pieces for an entire EPP project or an entire knitting project, though! I still really like it even if it wasn’t what I was going for.
On the outside I used a Kaufman printed Essex linen and a small section of an old Melody Miller Kokka print, and for the lining, I used this super cute Art Gallery “Ananas” print by Amy Sinibaldi.
For the most part, this pattern worked very well. I love how the foam and the quilting make the bag sturdy and that the lining is nice and smooth and flat.
The only trouble I had was the velcro on the tab—the two pieces just don’t quite line up. They also won’t stay stuck together even if you do force them together because it’s so close to the bend. It is entirely possible this was my fault, but I did try to be careful about this. To fix this I ripped off the velcro, added fusible fleece to the inside of the flap and then added a magnetic snap. The snap worked much better!
If I were to change anything the next time I made it, I would make the handle on the end maybe a tiny bit longer so it didn’t sit flush against the bag, and maybe I’d use two smaller magnetic snaps instead of one large one so that the entire flap end laid flat when closed.

See you back here next time with another zip pouch!
Was looking for information on “The Cube” bag, found a link to your blog and was intrigued by your 2017 Zipper project! Checked out your projects and saw that you made this “Double Zip” bag, So pretty! I just made one too and it’s my first “By Annie” bag. You say the bag was bigger than you needed — in 2017 was it only patterned in one size? The pattern now (version 2.0) comes in three sizes. I also like your idea of using a magnetic snap. I didn’t have any problems with the velcro but it doesn’t feel as secure as a snap might be — although I won’t know for sure until I put the bag to use! Kudos to you for completing such an awesome and challenging year-long project!!
